Still feeling tired and dizzy, checked emails, fb etc, then sat quietly reading about ben nicholson for awhile before coffee. I had expected/planned to be straight into working but just needed the head space. This project is taking on a very different feel to what i anticipated .. i thought it would be just a case of 'getting on with it', once i had decided what was next, as this is how i have often worked in the past with work for the gallery. This project seems at present to be about a day at a time and i'm not thinking about/anticipating my work outside my studio.... i'm coming into my room and listening.
i had anticipated that in week1, i would have created many more pieces/images,(being a bit manic, like on other making projects) but there seems to be a calmness around ...perhaps because i've not felt 100%, and had to let go of certain expectations... it is as it is. Today I'm also wondering about being more discerning in the number of images created....but that idea may change tomorrow!

2.1.1 scanned sticky back plastic on transparent film |
After sitting quietly for awhile, I remembered that i had some scrap sticky backed transparent film somewhere .... and found 9, A4 sheets of 3 colours, blue, yellow and red. i was't terribly excited by the choice of colour, then remembered that these had been the modernists choice/code of primary colours....
Decided not to draw out any shapes on backing paper but just to use scissors (i've not done this before) as drawing tool. (matisse?... want to see the London exhibition .. July??) What to cut out? ... just randomly chose red and started on circular shape, which in my mind, became pebbles as i worked and i reflected on the many pebbles i'd collected, especially from the beaches on the Isle of Man and Iona. I can recognise my pebbles in the shapes i've created.
I was going to stick film onto card but remembered i had a few A4 transparent acetate sheets and decided to use these, as i could use scanner with a colour sheet behind as a coloured background.
I spent a considerable amount of time just very carefully cutting and sticking whilst a pattern built up; almost as a form of meditation. By lunchtime i onlty had the one piece!.. which i scanned on high res. I really liked the way the colours were so bright and clear, both acetate and print on gloss white photo paper. Acetate reminded me of stained glass.

After lunch i played with different coloured backgrounds, different filters in picassa, and scanning the bits from the backing of the coloured film. I scanned on different, but high res. (from 300 to 1200) so that i could crop images later if needed. some of these scans created huge files and picassa couldn't handle the cropping....the process was also very slow due to size, and i'm having to resize all to include in blog which is a bit of a pain....in future i will work with a smaller resolution. I also tried scanning with lid up, but this didn't work (just white) I also copy printed images onto fluorescent pink card and there was a huge difference in colour balance .... the scanning came out light pink. I also played with repeating the image, using printing and scanning.

2.1.4 repeat pattern |

2.1.5 repeat pattern print |

2.1.6 scanned bits on print from day1 |

2.1.7 colour filtered pieces |

2.1.8 scanned pieces |

2.1.9 scanned pieces on card |

2.1.11 black background scan |

2.1.10 greyscale with black card |

2.1.12 colour filter |
I feel i have generated quite a few different ideas through this experiment with layers.
2.1.4/5 with their repeat patterns remind me of brain scans. Many artists, including Gerhard Richter have been experimenting with this type of patterning. I think many of these images could be used in printing/painting/collage on a larger scale, although I think I prefer cutting out neat lines to painting them!
In 2.1.6 I like the way two different ideas come together to make something new. The different colour schemes each create a very different atmoshere.
Not feeling any particular leanings towards any particular theme/direction. and again today has seemed complete in itself for the time being.

2.1.13 cyanotype image |

2.1.14 cyanotype image |

2.1.15 cyanotype |
Just added these blue, cyanotype images as an after thought ....don't know if they are leading anywhere.... but maybe.....
I am finding this reflective blog more time consuming than i expected, but i hope to get quicker... the posting of pics is not very intuitive and layout goes all over the place (does it really matter?)
This all seems an important process as i think it helps me to absorb what i've made ... but i don't feel i have a language to describe the work at present. i wish I could be quicker with the technology, but it will happen. I feel i'm standing back and observing what is being created and just waiting ... all seems a bit strange but ok.

| Miro and Calder came to mind after reflecting on my imagery...think i can see similarities not just in use of colour, but in shapes as well. Non of this was in my mind when i created 2.1.1 (above left) and image was dictated by materials. Perhaps i need to make a mobile?! Considered making one in take2influences.... lets see what emerges later :)
