EP WK5 D2 (mon)

9.30. (mon)
painting from Friday has been at back of mind all weekend ... just not knowing where to go next.
-found it interesting that colours are subdued and mudied on canvas but on walls they sing so think it has  to do with proximity to white gloss, pine doors and grey carpet, although white walls in studio not helping.

....rested painting on radiator against blue wall and this makes me feel more comfortable with it....finding the stripes of doorway architriving adds interest.

stripes added using gimp program
added filter (phone) to image and feel darker image has more potential if i was working on allotment theme...wondering about further play with image on computer? however, feeling that break away has distanced me from areas i have been pursuing?? ..need to refocus.
image from above drawn on using alchemy program

psychopaint is a new programme i recently bought for $27, but haven't really used ... think it may have some potential in my work, especially uploaded and printed onto acrylic panels....psychopaint is different to photoshop/gimp in that the paint/colours can be 'pushed' around.

alchemy is a free programme i've had for ages but not explored. i uploaded image created in psychopaint and then drew onto it using cursor (maybe using mouse would be better) ....size of background upload affects image as only small section of this image uploaded.

am enjoying creating images using computer more than working with paint and feel sad about this as as i don't really see this as 'proper' art??!! think the above image (although created really quickly) is more dynamic than my painting :(    ..... perhaps a fusion of the twp (painting + digital) is way forward for me??!!

Is being unsettled anything to do with colours in suffolk being very different to yorkshire ... maybe feeling unsettled is due to knowing suffolk better than yorkshire.....searching for my sense of place...

...the colours in painting above are really a subdued suffolk colour palette (which i painted as soon as i arrived back home from suffolk)  is this why i'm not getting on with them in a painting?? although i love the colours used throughout the house. Do i need to spend time considering a colour pallette (framework) for yorkshire ???... this is what architects did for Isle of Man and also William Tillyer in his talk at MIMA spoke of how he doesn't want to paint a landscape, but abstracts the colours from the landscape into his work.

william tillyer

am still waiting for book on sean scully to arrive .... from what i can remember he uses palette from his surroundings, eg iona..... wonder what adventure i will be off on next.... am i getting a bit tired from all this wandering/wondering ... would like to settle into something .. also have open studios (june) at back of mind with linked exhibition at woodend studios (scarborough)and as  part of Rydale Artworks, the opportunity below has just arisen

'As we announced at the last meeting, RAW has been offered the opportunity of a group exhibition at Inspired by... Gallery, Danby Moors Centre in July this year. This is a great opportunity to exhibit works by all members of the network as we have both rooms available to us at the peak period at the gallery. Aspects of the Moors - is intended to highlight the range of work, media and approaches represented by RAW member artists, and we hope you will all participate in what we are sure will be a fantastic opportunity.
The show will run from Friday 25 July to Sunday 17 August. Members may submit up to six works, but the final selection will be made subject to the availability of space and the overall balance of the exhibition.'

the danby moors centre is a lovely gallery and one i have identified as wanting to exhibit in ..... but i need some new suitable work!! ... feeling a bit distressed over who i am as an artist .... i just don't know.

Aspire magazine have just rung me up... very very enthusiastic about my work in open studios brochure and want to do an article on me .... for £150 then £115+vat .... said i haven't any money and want to check out mag site-  aspiremagazinegroup.co.uk -
quite a hard sell patter ensued and she will ring back after lunch but i have decided that i am not going to pay for publicity; i just need to focus on my art and getting some work into galleries to earn some money.

Watched Anselm Kiefer video on sat pm and find his work fascinating ... love the way he plays and experiments and on such a huge scale but that also makes his work quite daunting ... scale definately adds wow factor. ... how can i do similar in smaller scale?? ... a book springs to mind as it offers a whole world to enter into wheras a painting is just a window???
